Burst pipes, leaks and flooding

Most water damage starts with something sudden: a pipe that bursts during a freeze, a water heater that gives out, a washing machine hose that splits, or a heavy storm.

Local help line coming soon. Until it opens: shut off the water at the main valve, turn off power to wet rooms if it is safe, take photos for insurance, and call your insurance company. Never wade into standing water near outlets.

Burst and frozen pipes

North Texas doesn’t freeze often, but when it does, pipes in exterior walls, attics and garages can split. The leak often shows up when the ice thaws. Shut off the main valve first, then call a plumber to fix the pipe and a restoration company to dry the house.

Water heaters, appliances and supply lines

Water heaters, dishwashers, ice makers, washing machines and toilet supply lines are common sources. Some leak slowly for weeks under a cabinet. Others let go all at once.

Storms and outside water

Heavy rain can push water under doors or through a damaged roof. Water that came from outside is treated as dirty water. Floodwater from rising water may be covered differently by insurance, so check your policy.

First steps

  1. If it’s safe, shut off the main water valve.
  2. Turn off power to wet rooms if you can reach the breaker without standing in water.
  3. Move valuables and furniture off wet floors.
  4. Take photos for your insurance company.
  5. Get a restoration company out quickly. Drying work usually goes better the sooner it starts.

Please note: This website is a free referral service, not a contractor. We connect you with an independent restoration company that serves your area. That company gives the estimate, does the work, and is responsible for it. We may be paid by the company for the referral. You are never charged by us. Read the full disclosure.
